Session 8

Session 8 - 1/28/2022

The session opened with an encounter - the two skeletons and wight that rose to their feet at the witch's hut. The wight got a couple good swings in, but ultimately the three of them were no match for the adventurers.

Lorenzo's character walked up to the door and knocked 4 times, in quick succession.  Beneath him, he could hear something lock into place.  When he opened the door, the party was greeted by a hag:

The inside of the hut is dark, save for a small fire burning in a potbelly stove.  Smoke and dust swirl in the air unnaturally.  There’s a scent of burning ginseng and rotting apples lingering.  In a corner is a ratty old brown cot and all around the rest of the walls are stacks of old books, bottles with odd liquids and lab equipment.  Standing motionless in the center of the hut is a crooked-backed old woman with a crooked walking stick.  She’s grinning at you with rotting jagged teeth.  Her face is yellowed, as though suffering from jaundice.  She’s dressed in a black robe, also tattered with age and in one hand is a rat, sitting politely, also staring at you.

Her mouth moves before you hear her speak, and then you hear in a whispering raspy voice,

“Bound am I by knights long ago,
To serve these riddles to thee,
Answer my questions three,
And back to prison for me,
Fail and I shall drown the world in sorrow.”

After a lot of deliberating, the party, led by Cat's character, was ultimately able to solve her riddles without errors.

  • I am boiling, I am iced, I am black, and I am brown and I am white.  I turn pearl to gold and turn from cold to hot or hot to cold.  What am I? -- Coffee
  • I have a golden head and a golden tail, but I’ve no body.  What am I? -- Gold Coin
  • I run opposite of flow and while you may love my cousins, my only wish is to eat you all by the dozens as I knock you down with a killing blow.  What am I? -- Wolf

After the witch's riddles were solved, thick vines burst through the floor of the hut, enveloping her and dragging her to her bed, where she was imprisoned once more.  As she was imprisoned, she said: , “The rains are just the start.  You cannot stop this.  You cannot stop this.  They’re already in every one of your mortal cities.”

After which you were blown clear and found her staff (a magic focus +1) and a ring (ring of protection +1).

You left, returned to the village, where you were rewarded with a pot of 25 gold the townfolk had collected and a free dinner and free night's stay at the inn.

The next day you continued on your journey with far less rain.  The next day it was clouding up again and you made camp.  Overnight, you heard distant voices in a draconic-like language with a rural accent.  The following day, the party was ambushed by Tumulta soldiers.  After a long, pitched battle, you eventually crushed them, took a short rest, then continued on.  That night was quieter, although the party did hear some croaking nearby from some creature.  The croaking alternating between deep and low to very high-pitched.

All through the trip, Diego's character read from his book - The Magical Meanderings of Modesto.  Amongst the various spells he read about, he also learned a lot about the shores of Scélan, granting him a +1 to any navigation check made in the waters around that island.
